Mobile-World-Congress-20151Sri Lanka has always been the leader in innovative telecommunication technologies in the region and was also the first to introduce 3G and 4G LTE in South Asia. Having the highest level of mobile penetration level in the region as well as the world, Sri Lanka was also recognized as the country with the lowest entry level fixed broadband charges according to the “Measuring the Information Society 2012” report published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Mobile World Congress (MWC) held in Barcelona, Spain, organized by the GSM Association is the largest mobile related conference and exhibition in the world. Almost every mobile related company, association, organization and startup either exhibits or participates in this conference every year. The event this year was crowned the largest ever with more than 93000 visitors attending the event and an expanded exhibition area being added.

2015, was a notable year for Sri Lanka in terms of participating at MWC. Two of the most prominent heads of organizations were speakers at the event while, 6 Sri Lankan startups also exhibited for the first time in the sub-event called “4 Years From Now” while Dialog Axiata bagged two awards at the Global Mobile Awards.

Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Group Chief Executive, Dialog Axiata delivered a keynote presentation on The New Mobile Identity while Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, Founder, CEO and Chief Architect of WSO2 presented on Mobile Access, Authentication and Interoperability.

Sri Lankan Middle-ware company WSO2 also launched their WSO2.Telco product, an open source, cloud-ready smart exchange that enables mobile network operators to interoperate easily and securely—via web-centric APIs—with diverse services in the mobile Internet ecosystem.

4YFN is a startup event devoted to innovation in the mobile and digital ecosystem. A business platform focused on building ideas and forging lasting relationships for international startups, investors and corporations. The event is held as a sub event of the Mobile World Congress.

The ICT Agency of Sri Lanka through the Spiralation – Tech Startups Support program supported 6 innovative startups to exhibit at the Four Years From Now (4YFN) event.

Audinary, Mogo Solutions, Square Mobile, Arimac Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., Silverleap (Pvt) Ltd., and PayMedia (Pvt) Ltd. were part of the startup delegation who exhibited at 4YFN. The event was attended by more than 8000 unique visitors according to the organizers. The startups were able to interact with several investors, potential clients, other innovative startups as well as listen to talks by several high profile speakers on the startup space.

The highlight of MWC for Sri Lanka was the awards won by Dialog Axiata. Dialog Ideamart, a platform presented by Dialog Axiata PLC to developers and content providers to use the Dialog network based features via shared APIs and monetize their efforts was awarded with the “Best Mobile Technology Enabler Award” while Dialog eZ-Cash received the award for “NFC & Mobile Money”.
